The Professional Student: “Situation Analysis” Subway Sandwiches SWOT

Hello, and welcome back! Graduate Students at WCU in the Innovative Leadership and Entrepreneurship master’s program were challenged this week with using the SWOT analysis framework to analyze a company of their choosing. Since I previously chose Subway Sandwiches as a subject for my advertisement blog posts, I decided to continue with them.

I fondly remember eating Subway sandwiches when I was younger in the early 2000s. As a freshly graduated from high school “adult” newly enlisted in the Army, Subway was always my go-to option. You couldn’t beat the $5 footlong promotions, and I was on the budget of an Army Private. Money was not plentiful, but I made it work. Chicken teriyaki on Italian herbs and cheese bread with olives, green peppers, onions, and spinach toasted with pepper jack cheese was my favorite Subway sandwich during that time, and I would probably order it now if I still ate at Subway.

Please enjoy my presentation on Subway. Below the video, you’ll find a complete reference list with clickable links.

Shawn,

Great job with this! Admittedly, I recorded and put my SWOT together this week but with the Easter holiday, held it until this morning to post. I am glad I took that path as listening to your own analysis was super insightful. Likewise, your selection of Subway was a super interesting choice, given their over saturation of many regional markets. They have also suffered some large marketing setbacks with their choice of paid endorsers (Jarrod).

One thing I really appreciated about your analysis, given you chose an existing business, was your company overview, which set the tone and helped each us to get a basic understanding of the organization’s framework. I chose a prospective business, thus I may need to think of how to best outline what is a less than formed structure. Your notation of Roark Capital purchasing Subway was an interesting development, given we know they currently own Jimmy John’s as well. This makes one wonder if a potential merger or acquisition strategy may be on the horizon. Transparently, this may be another potential opportunity and/or threat as well within your analysis.

Moving on, in terms of strengths, while the “fast” in “fast food” seems somewhat inherent, Subway’s ability to offer healthy fast food is a genuine strength in that market. We often see Subway locations within other businesses, such as Wal Mart or gas stations and this is because they can prep quickly for those on the go. In turn, while it may be a strength shared by other competitors, you may think about adding speed to that list. Likewise, you have advertising strategies and franchising listed, though diving deeper into the national support offered to franchisees is potentially something worth elaborating on. For those who own a franchise, the national exposure and marketing support can be a make or break deal (as someone who has delved into the franchise model, I can promise this is true).

In terms of weaknesses, you mentioned it earlier, but you may also think about adding over saturation of locations. Currently, in my town of Denver NC, there are three Subway locations. While they have been sustained, this makes profitable operations for potential franchise owners much more difficult to achieve and thus, less attractive investment options. Another potential option that may get lost, given their “Eat Fresh” motto, their reliance upon timely and fresh produce and meats could also be considered a weakness. Sure, this is a selling point but with supply chain and logistics issues magnified across the world, what happens if they are unable to get these supplies?

Wrapping up with opportunities and threats, great job! Delivery is an interesting choice for opportunities, though as someone who has been involved with Jimmy John’s franchises in the past, I have seen the value of that service handled in house go dramatically down. The onset of Uber Eats and other ordering applications has lessened the impact of in house delivery tremendously, as consumers now have options for delivery almost anywhere through outside vendors. I still look back to the capital group that owns Subway and have to think about a potential M&A strategy that could be on the horizon, whether this is merging Jimmy Johns and Subway or spinning off an entirely new entity. We are seeing the Sub industry become more and more saturated and as such, this could be something feasible down the road. You did a nice job calling this saturation out in your threats, thus given that position, what opportunities could the parent company use to counter? I believe M&A could be one of those potential remedies. Finally, great job calling out potential legal issues as a viable threat!

Zane,

Thank you for your comment and feedback! I had never thought of market saturation as a possible weakness, but your observation is spot on. I appreciate the example reference to your town of Denver, NC, and your observations regarding the entire analysis. It will be interesting to see how Subway moves forward, especially under new ownership, and if it can gain back any lost market share while sticking to its strategy of opening up more franchises.

Kindly,

Shawn

Shawn,

I appreciate that you used an existing business because it is easier to digest what is going on, as I assume that most of us have frequented a subway. One thing that I love about Subway is that they were one of the leaders in getting a quick sub/sandwich or salad with your desired toppings. You did a great job presenting on how the decorations are outdated and kind of a thing of the past. They are somewhat slow, and the customers often seem dissatisfied to do their jobs. They are almost always poorly staffed and underpaid. They have an extreme amount of responsibility to be working with just 1 to 2 people during peak time. Locations are usually in some suspect places and their quality has declined. They have been able to follow up with some healthy trends which has been positive on some of their sales. I remember they had the fake tuna scandal that hurt some of their profits. I do see that a drive-through could attract people who refuse to go inside of a restaurant. Kiosks would definitely be helpful. I think they became so popular because you could see the sandwich and ask for extra pickles or mayo to get it made to your exact specifications. All locations used to take coupons but now the mailers are only good at certain locations because most retailers won’t take them. Other sandwich shops that hand-cut their meats are getting more business because it is more of a deli-type experience. The sandwich market isn’t as small as it was when it started booming. Their prices are extremely high for the quality of meat that they now sell. They should probably focus on starting to hand-cut meat and gaining a few more employees to increase the customer satisfaction experience. You did an awesome job on this analysis!

Hi, Tonya! For consistency, I thought it would be better to stick with one business throughout the assignment. You’re correct, as I used to eat Subway at least once a week in my early 20s! Thank you for your feedback and for pointing out the issue regarding coupons. I was unaware of that. If Subway took a different approach, as you suggested, I think that would boost sales, but they would have to increase staffing and change how employees are paid and treated.

Thanks again for stopping by!

Kindly,
Shawn
